Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind

The deaf community in Sri Lanka faces major obstacles in education and employment. To date, no deaf learner has entered a university. The deaf community faces negative attitudes and discrimination. Though the policy environment has been improving related to the rights of differently-abled people, the community receives very limited government support.
  

Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind (Kaithadi, Jaffna) is the primary institution comprehensively serving the deaf community in the North and East of Sri Lanka. The school was started in 1956 and is being administered by the Board of Trustees appointed by the Anglican Church.  Currently, 125 deaf, and 3 visually impaired children attend the school, the majority residing at the school.

They do have regular operational funds. However, they are finding it difficult to raise funds for projects and activities that can improve the quality of life of these children. We have discussed the current needs of the school with Ms. Amara Somasundaram, the Principal of the school. Possible projects include repairing hearing aids, obtaining new hearing aids, training for hearing aid repair, small-scale farming, and improving the computer capability of the staff. The principal will hold further discussions with teachers and the school community.

As a first initiative to assist the school, LetUsHelpNow Foundation provided LKR 1,096,667.66 to help them pilot raised-bed/vertical gardening at the school. The soil conditions and shortage of water in the school’s environment are not suitable for traditional gardening. 

The funds were donated by 96  LetUsHelpNow contributors from Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. 

இலங்கையில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்காக ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்ட பாடசாலைகளுள் முதன்மையானது, கைதடி யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் இயங்கிவரும் நவீல்ட் செவிப்புலன் விழிப்புலன் இழந்தோர் பாடசாலை. வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்கு மாகாணங்களிலிருந்து மாணவர்கள் இங்கு தங்கியிருந்து கல்வி கற்கிறார்கள். இங்கு 125 செவிப்புலன் இழந்த சிறார்களும், 3 விழிப்புலன் இழந்த சிறார்களும் கல்வி பயில்கின்றனர். அடுத்த மாதம், மேலும் 20 சிறார்கள் கிழக்கு மாகாணத்திலிருந்து அழைத்து வரப்படவுள்ளனர்.

இவர்களுக்கு அன்றாட தேவைகளுக்கான நிதியுதவிகள் கிடைத்து வருகின்ற போதிலும், சிறார்களின் வாழ்வியல் முன்னேற்றத்திற்கான செயற்பாடுகளுக்கான நிதி நெருக்கடி காணப்படுகிறது.  அதிபர் அமரா சோமசுந்தரம் அவர்களுடான தேவையறிதல் கலந்துரையாடலில், விவசாய பண்ணை ஆரம்பித்தல், செவிப்புலன் கருவி வழங்கல், பழுதடைந்த செவிப்புலன் கருவிகளை திருத்துதல், செவிப்புலன் கருவிகளை திருத்தும் கற்றல் பயிற்சி,  கணினி பாடநெறிகளை ஒழுங்கு படுத்தல் போன்ற தேவைகள் எடுத்துவரப்பட்டது. மற்றைய ஆசிரியர்களுடனும் கலந்துரையாடல் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது.

இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு உதவம் வகையில், ஒரு முன்னோடித் திட்டமாக, செங்குத்து அல்லது நாற்றங்கால் தோட்டம் அமைக்க Rs1,096,667.66 அறம்செய்வோம் அறக்கட்டளை வழங்கியது. இந்தப் பள்ளி இருக்கும் இடத்தின் மண் மற்றும் நீர் தன்மைகள், வழமையான தோட்டச் செயற்பாடுகளுக்கு உகந்தது அல்ல என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அறம் செய்வோம் அறக்கட்டளையின் கனடா, அவுஸ்திரேலியா, பிரித்தானியாவில் வாழும் 96 தன்னார்வ நண்பர்களால் வழங்கப்பட்டது.  

இம்மாத செயற்றிட்டமானது இங்குள்ள அனைத்து சிறார்களுக்கும் பயனுள்ளதாகவும் அவர்களின் வாழ்வியல் மேம்பாட்டினை உருவாக்கும் செயலாகவும் அமையும்.
